Language (Words) have the Power to Change Reality

A sage wandered the countryside and, as he passed near a village, was approached by a woman who beseeched him to help a sick child nearby.
He went to the village, and a crowd gathered around him, for such a man was a rare sight. The sick child was brought to him, and he said a prayer over her.
“Do you really think your prayer will help her when medical care has failed?” yelled a man from the crowd.
“You know nothing of such things! You are a stupid fool!” said the sage to the man.
The man became very angry with these words and his face grew hot and red. He was about to say something, or perhaps strike out, when the sage walked over to him and said: “If one word has such power as to make you so angry and hot, may not another have the power to heal?”
And thus, the sage healed two people that day.

In the Gospel of Saint John we read:
The Word became flesh; he came to dwell among us... through him all things come to be; no single thing was created without him. All that came to be was alive with his life, and that life was the light of men.
The light shines on in the dark, and the darkness has never quenched it.
Look steadily at the darkness. It won’t be long before you see the light.
Gaze at things. It won’t be long before you see this Word.
The Word became flesh; he came to dwell among us... And stop those frantic efforts to change flesh back into words. Words, words, words!

“Language does have the power to change reality. Therefore, treat your words as the mighty instruments they are – to heal, to bring into being, to nurture, to cherish, to bless, to forgive.” –  This week I needed the message from both the story and the quote.

And suddenly you know: It's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.

The true path is chosen by our ability to love it, not to suffer for it.

"I am willing to give up everything", said the prince to the master. "Please accept me as your disciple."
"How does a man choose his path?" asked the master.
"Through sacrifice," answered the prince. "A path which demands sacrifice, is a true path."
The master bumped into some shelves. A precious vase fell, and the prince threw himself down in order to grab hold of it. He fell badly and broke his arm, but managed to save the vase.
"Which is the greater sacrifice: to watch the vase smash, or break one's arm in order to save it?" asked the master.
"I do not know," said the prince.
"Then how can you guide your choice for sacrifice? The true path is chosen by our ability to love it, not to suffer for it.

I was proud of my lawn but I too was plagued with dandelions that I kept fighting with every means in my power. So learning to love them was no easy task.
I began by talking to them each day. Cordial. Friendly. They maintained a sullen silence. They were smarting from the war I had waged against them—and were suspicious of my motives.
But the day came when they smiled. And relaxed.
And we started to be friends. My lawn, of course, was ruined. But how attractive my garden became!

I knew he was becoming blind by degrees. And he fought it with every means in his power. When medicine gave out, he fought it with his emotions. It took courage to say, “I suggest you learn to love your blindness.”
At first he would have nothing to do with it. And when he eventually brought himself to speak to his blindness his words were bitter. But he kept on speaking till the bitterness became resignation and tolerance and acceptance and, one day, much to his own surprise, friendliness... and love.
Then came the day when he was able to put his arm around his blindness and say, “I love you.” That was the day I saw him smile again.
His vision, of course, was lost forever. But how attractive his face became!

And suddenly you know: It's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.

Be willing to be a beginner every single morning

The temple was built on an island and it had a thousand bells. Bells big and small, fashioned by the finest craftsmen in the world. When the wind blew or a storm raged, all the bells would peal out in a symphony that would send the heart of the hearer into raptures.
But over the centuries the island sank into the ocean and, with it, the temple bells. An ancient legend said that the bells still rang out ceaselessly, and could be heard by anyone who would listen.
Inspired by the legend a young man travelled thousands of miles, determined to hear those bells. He sat for days on the shore facing the vanished island and listened with all his might. But all he heard was the sound of the sea.
He made every effort to block it out but to no avail; the sound of the sea seemed to flood the world. He kept at his task for weeks. Each time he got disheartened he would listen to the village pundits as they spoke with unction of the mysterious legend.
Then his heart would be inflamed.., only to become discouraged when weeks of further efforts yielded no results. Finally he decided to give up the attempt. Perhaps he was not destined to listen to the bells. Perhaps the legend was not true.
It was his final day, and he went to the shore to say goodbye to the sea and the sky and the wind and the coconut trees. He lay on the sand, and for the first time, listened to the sound of the sea. Soon he was so lost in the sound that he was barely conscious of himself, so deep was the silence the sound produced. In the depth of that silence, he heard it!
The tinkle of a tiny bell followed by another, and another and another... till every one of the thousand temple bells was pealing out in harmony, and his heart was rapt in joyous ecstasy.

Brownie, our dog, sat looking up the tree; ears cocked, and tail tensely wagging. He was attending to a monkey. Just one thing filled his consciousness: the monkey.
No thought disturbed his total concentration, no worry for tomorrow. Brownie was the nearest thing to Contemplation I have ever seen. You may have experienced some of this yourself when you were totally absorbed watching a cat at play.

Do I need 'Certified Specialits' to live?

A dialogue from the gospels:

“And you,” said Jesus, “Who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Son of the Living God.”
Then Jesus said, “Simon, son of Jonah, you are favoured indeed.’ You did not learn that from mortal man: my Father revealed it to you.”

A dialogue from life:

Jesus: And you, who do you say I am?
Christian: You are the Son of the living God.
Jesus: Right. But how unfortunate you are that you learnt this only from mortal man. It has not yet been revealed to you by my Father.
Christian: True, Lord. I feel cheated. Somebody gave me the answers before your Father could speak. I marvel at your wisdom that you said nothing to Simon yourself, till your Father had spoken first.
I went to the office and they told me: To learn to pray I need a Spiritual Director; to find God’s will for me I consult an Expert in Discernment; to understand the Bible I consult a Scripture Scholar; to know if I have sinned or not I need the Moral Theologian; and to have my sins forgiven I kneel before the Priest.

The message alert buzzed, I pressed the 'open' button, and read.
A dead man suddenly came to life and began to pound on the lid of the coffin. The lid was raised; the man sat up. “What are you doing?” he said to the assembled crowd, “I am not dead.” His words were met with silent disbelief. One of the mourners finally said, “Friend, the doctors and the priests have certified that you are dead. So dead you are.”

And he was duly buried. So was I

Every name/word is more a distortion than a description

Mr. Somerset Maugham, a well-known English author was on a visit to Ramana Maharshi. He also went to see Major Chadwick in his room and there he suddenly became unconscious.
Major Chadwich requested Ramana to see him. Ramana went into the room, took a seat and gazed on Mr. Maugham. He regained his senses and saluted Ramana. They remained silent and sat facing each other for nearly an hour. The author attempted to ask questions but did not speak. Major Chadwick encouraged him to ask.
Ramana said “All finished. Heart-talk is all talk. All talk must end in silence.” They smiled and Ramana left the room.

"Everying said about God is false.” Every name/word is more a distortion than a description"
The disciples knew what was coming next.
The master continued, “Words are only a distortion of a reality that can never be comprehended by reason.”
Frustrated, the disciples asked him what they should do.
“Just Be in silence.”
A young disciple ventured, “Why do you keep on talking then?”
The master smiled. “Ah, but you have not understood.  Don’t just listen to my words. Listen to the silence.”

I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away … just for this time in my life.

The 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with her hair fashionably coiffed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window.

“I love it,” she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room …. just wait.” “That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged … it’s how I arrange my mind.
“I already decided to love it … It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away … just for this time in my life.”

The Lord wants to give every soul a fair trial.

A sage was sitting peacefully by a river when a mischievous person, a passer-by saw the bare back of his neck and yielded to the temptation to give it a resounding whack.

The stranger was full of wonder at the sound his hand made on the fleshy nape of the sage's neck, then the sage, smarting with pain, stood up to hit the stranger back back. “Wait a minute,” said the aggressor. “You can hit me if you wish. But  first answer this question: Was the sound of the whack produced by my hand or by the back of your neck?”

Said the sage, “Answer that yourself. My pain won’t allow me to theorize. You can afford to do so, because you don’t feel what I feel"!.

The village preacher, at the home of an elderly parishioner was busy answering grandma’s questions over a cup of coffee.

“Why does the Lord send us epidemics every so often?” asked the old lady.

“Well,” said the preacher, “sometimes people become so wicked they have to be removed and so the good Lord allows the coming of epidemics".

“But then,” objected grandma, “why do so many good people get removed with the bad?”

“The good ones are summoned as witnesses,” explained the preacher. “The Lord wants to give every soul a fair trial.”

The Dance is different from the dancer, yet it has no existence apart from the Dancer.

Indian sages, developed a magnificent image to describe God’s relationship with Creation. God ‘dances’ Creation. He is the Dancer, Creation is his Dance. Nataraj is the clearest image of the activity of God which any art or religion can boast of…A more fluid and energetic representation of a moving figure than the dancing figure of Shiva can scarcely be found anywhere.
The dance is different from the dancer, yet it has no existence apart from him. You cannot take it home in a box, if it pleases you. The moment the dancer stops, the dance ceases to be. In our quest for God, we think too much, reflect too much, talk too much. Even when we look at this dance that we call creation, we are the whole time thinking, talking, theorizing (to ourselves and others) reflecting, analyzing, philosophizing. Words. Noise.

Be silent and contemplate the Dance. Just look: a star, a flower, a fading leaf, a bird, a stone... any fragment of the Dance will do. Look. Listen. Smell. Touch. Taste. And, hopefully, it won’t be long before you see Him—the Dancer Himself!
If you really heard a bird sing, if you really saw a tree... you would know. Beyond words and concepts. Beyond our conditioned, preconcieved ideas, notions!

What was that you said? You have heard dozens of birds sing and seen hundreds of trees? Ah, was it the tree you saw or the label? If you look at a tree and see a tree, you have really not seen the tree. When you look at the tree and see a miracle—then, at last, you have seen! Did your heart never fill with wordless wonder when you heard a bird in song?

Do you think It is better that one man die to save the nation.?

The Commander of the Occupation troops said to the Mayor of the mountain village: “We know you are hiding a traitor. Unless you hand him over to us, we will harass your people by every means in our power.”
The village was, indeed, hiding a man who was evidently innocent. But what could the Mayor do now that the welfare of the village was at stake?
Days of discussions in the Village Council led to no conclusion. So the Mayor took the matter up with the priest.
Priest and Mayor spent a whole night searching the Scriptures and finally came up with a text that said, “It is better that one man die to save the nation.” So the Mayor handed over the fugitive whose screams echoed through the village as he was tortured till he died.

Twenty years later a prophet came to that village, went right up to that Mayor and said “How could you have done this? That man was sent by God to be the saviour of this village. And you handed him over to be tortured and killed.”
“But where did I go wrong?” the Mayor pleaded.“The priest and I looked at the Scriptures and did what they commanded.”

“That’s where you went wrong,” said the prophet. “You looked thru' the Scriptures. You should have looked into his eyes.”

God decided to visit the earth so He sent an angel to survey the place before his visit. The angel's report read: “Most of them are starving and unemployed.”
God said, “Then I shall become incarnate in the form of food for the hungry and work for the unemployed.”

All human nature vigorously resists grace because grace changes us and the change is painful.

This is one fantastic joke that I can't help laughing non-stop! And every time I think of it during the day, it brings a smile to my face. Now I want you to visualize it the way I picture the scene in my minds eye. The elephant's in the pool, happily cooling off. Showering himself with the occassional spray from this hose-pipe that is his huge trunk. Along comes this little mouse, struts up to the edge of the pool, hands on his hips, pulls himself up erect, to seem taller than he really is, and demands that the elephant gets out! Audacity! Read on......

An elephant was enjoying a dip in a Jungle pool when a rat came up to insist that he get out. “I won’t,” said the elephant.
“I insist you get out this minute,” said the rat. “Why?”
“I shall tell you that only after you are out of the pool.”
“Then I won’t get out.”
But he finally lumbered out of the pool, stood in front of the rat and said, “Now then, why did you want me to get out of the pool?”
“To check if you were wearing my swimming trunks,” said the rat.

An elephant will sooner fit into the trunks of a rat than we will accept 'change'.

All human nature vigorously resists grace because grace changes us and the change is painful.

You don't owe me anything,

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water! She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it so slowly, and then asked, How much do I owe you?"

You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."

He said ... "Then I thank you from my heart."

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Many year's later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.

Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words ...

"Paid in full with one glass of milk"

(Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.

A little help from you will go a long way......

The Nature of the Rain is the same, Yet it brings forth Flowers in the Garden and Thorns in the Bush!

One night the diver went to the indoor pool at the college he attended. The lights were all off, but as the pool had big skylights and the moon was bright, there was plenty of light to practice by. The young man climbed up to the highest diving board and as he turned his back to the pool on the edge of the board and extended his arms out, he saw his shadow on the wall.

The shadow of his body was in the shape of a cross. Instead of diving, he knelt down and asked God to come into his life.

As the young man stood, a maintenance man walked in and turned the lights on. The pool had been drained for repairs.

Somebody once asked me why I included spirituality with such alacrity in my press releases. I was taken aback by the question and gave it some deep thought. I realized then I was'nt upset with the person because he questioned my belief  but was really upset with myself for having taken peoples acceptance for granted.
Its then that I decided that I will sing my song, dance my dance and if someone profited from it, very good, if not, very good. After all 'the nature of the rain is the same yet it brings forth thorns in the bush and flowers in the garden!' And what a wide variety! What a burst of colors! Including thorns and thistles.

What’s the good of a fine house if you don’t have a peaceful planet to put it on?

Uncle Tom had a weak heart, so when the family learnt that he had inherited a billion dollars, they feared to tell him lest the news give him a stroke. So they sought the help of the priest who assured them he would do the needful.
“Tell me, Tom,” said Father Murphy, “If God, in his mercy, were to send you a billion dollars, what would you do with it?”
“I’d give you half of it for the Church, Father.” Father Murphy got the stroke!
When an industrialist got a stroke from pushing his industrial empire it was easy to show him his selfishness and greed.
When the priest got a stroke from pushing God’s Kingdom he could not see that this was selfishness, only, in a more respectable disguise: Is it God’s Kingdom you are pushing or yourself? I constantly ask myself. The Kingdom needs no pushing. Your anxiety betrays you, does it not?

I was saying we want other things, accurately put, we don’t want to be unconditionally happy. I’m ready to be happy, provided, I have this, that or the other thing! Its like saying to your friend, your wife, your God or anyone: You are my happiness. If I don’t get you, I refuse to be happy. Its important we understand that we refuse to be happy without these conditions. We’ve been taught to place our happiness in them.
So the first thing to do is to realize the fact that if we want love, freedom, joy, peace – we need spirituality. Not piety, devotion, religion or worship, but Spirituality! What a waste of tremendous energy, of health, of emotions that comes from the heartache, loneliness, fear, confusion, conflict in the hearts of people, inner conflict, outer conflict! Suppose someone shows us we have a way to truly love one another, be at peace, be at love, would we want it? Can you think of anything more practical than Spirituality. But we have people thinking that big business is more practical, that science and politics is more practical. What’s the earthly good of putting men on the moon, when we cannot live in peace on earth? What’s the good of a fine house if you don’t have a peaceful planet to put it on?

“Spirituality is not to be learned by flight from the world, or by running away from things, or by turning solitary and going apart from the world. Rather, we must learn an inner solitude wherever or with whomsoever we may be. We must learn to penetrate things and find God there.”
Meister Eckhart

Did You Know? I should love my friend on account of his own goodness and virtues and account of all that he is in himself. I did'nt!

The Teacher was sitting in the wood with thirty or forty monks. They had shared an excellent lunch and they were enjoying each other's company. A farmer passing by, was very unhappy. He stopped and asked theTeacher and the monks whether they had seen his cows pass by. The Teacher said they had not seen any cows pass.
The farmer said, “Monks, I’m so unhappy. I have twelve cows and I don’t know why they all ran away. I have also a few acres of a sesame seed plantation and the insects have eaten up everything. I suffer so much I think I am going to kill myself.”
The Teacher said, “My friend, we have not seen any cows passing by here. You might like to look for them in the other direction.”
So the farmer thanked him and went away, and the Teacher turned to his monks and said, “My dear friends, you are the happiest people in the world. You don’t have any cows to lose. If you have too many cows to take care of, you will be very busy.
“That is why, in order to be happy, you have to learn the art of releasing your cows (laughter). You release the cows one by one. In the beginning you thought that the cows were essential to your happiness, and you tried to get more and more cows. But now you realize that cows are not really conditions for your happiness; they constitute an obstacle for your happiness. That is why you are determined to release your cows.”

We people want to see God with eyes as we see a cow, and to love Him as we love a cow - for the milk and cheese and profit it brings us. This is how it is with people who love God for the sake of outward wealth or inward comfort. We do not rightly love God, when we love Him for our own advantage.
If I had a friend and loved him because of the benefits which this brought me and because of getting my own way, then it would not be my friend that I loved but myself. I should love my friend on account of his own goodness and virtues and account of all that he is in himself. Only if I love my friend in this way do I love him properly

Thank you for stopping by to read, rate and comment. As I was about to finish this post a thought just flashed acroos my mind, Do you really think I'm doing the right thing, operating PetesPlace, I mean? Please feel free to share your thoughts. Thank you.

Improving Your Self-Image - II

Forgive yourself.
Learn to look into a mirror and say, "Don't change, I love you just as you are."
You can do it for yourself. Look into a mirror and imagine a dark cloud around your heart. (This cloud is the painful part of your life.) When you breathe in, breathe that dark cloud into yourself, and breathe out in its place your joy, your peace, your serenity, your happiness. Continue breathing in and out. Do it not only for yourself, but for others as well, and see what a difference it will make in your life.
Here's an example. There's a magnificent meditational practice from Tibet called Kundalin. Joan Borysenko once suggested it at a conference in Boston. She described how the Dalai Lama responded when asked how he felt about the Chinese (who murdered the priests, raped the nuns, practically destroyed Tibetan civilization in order to break the will of the people). His response was "I try to take in their pain and give back my joy and peace."
Always see yourself at your best. Expect the best in yourself.
This step I want to emphasize. When you read this book, simply expect that you will be the best when you have finished. One of the golden keys to success is to act as if failure were impossible. This way you override all the negativity that has been drummed into your subconscious. You were inundated with it from your culture, your parents and teachers, your neighbors, and your education (not to mention your religion, which is one of the greatest programmers and conditioners we have, despite its enormous benefits).
How often did you come home from school with an A on your report card to be greeted with "Why not an A+?" We are simply not good enough! Always expect the best of yourself. This posture of expectancy will actually move you in the direction of what's best in you. And it will start happening to you the day you try it.
There was a story in the news about a little girl who was unable to smile because the muscles in her face wouldn't respond. The doctors operated, and happily she is able to smile today. It is a known medical fact that exercising the muscles of the face employed in smiling can have a salutary effect on the rest of your well-being. Your life really is directed by your subconscious mind most of the time. What you are doing is planting the seed of cheerfulness in your subconscious mind, where it will have its effect during the day.
Stop comparing yourself with others. Go at your own pace.
Some will be ahead, some behind. Just go at your own speed.
A further way to program anything you desire into your subconscious is simply to breathe in deeply and then relax your entire being and say, Relax now. Do it a second time, and then a third time. Then breathe three times and say, Wide awake now. Then do the breathing and relaxing, and when you are completely relaxed, suggest to yourself that today you remain cheerful no matter what happens. Watch how your subconscious mind will operate even when difficult things occur during the day.
An interesting footnote to this point was made by Norman Cousins (author of ) in an interview he had with Tony Robbins in Tony's "Power Talk" series. Cousins described students who took blue and red pills, one a super calmer, one a super exciter, but the contents were reversed. The students were told that the blue pills had the chemicals that produced calm. (Really the red pills had the calming chemicals.) Fifty percent of the students experienced what their expectations led them to believe, proving that mind was more powerful in these instances than was the drug. Of course, this is the principle underlying the use of placebos in medical practice.
Another variation on this idea is Tony's story of the teachers who were told by professional examiners that the students they would teach were "spurters," children who would advance very quickly in their lessons. The professionals had determined this by the tests they had given. At the end of the term, when the professionals returned to check the results, sure enough, those students designated as spurters had advanced rapidly. But the professionals admitted that the results of the tests were doctored. There were no spurters. The children advanced because their teachers "expected" them to advance. And of course this expectation was transmitted to the students continually throughout the term.
Join hands with us and together we can make a difference.
